What happens if you fail the Victorian builder registration exam?

If you do not meet the standard
- The Commission writes to you with the outcome. If you did not meet the required standard, your application for registration may be refused. Source: Commission: Building exams, frequently asked questions, What happens if I fail the exam?
- If the application is refused, you can ask for an internal review of the decision. The refusal letter confirms how. Source: Commission: Building exams, frequently asked questions, What happens if I fail the exam?
- To sit another exam after a refusal, you make a new application for registration. Source: Commission: Building exams, frequently asked questions, If I fail the exam, can I sit another exam?
- A new application carries the application fee again. For an individual in 2026 to 2027 that is $1,039.00 for Domestic Builder (Unlimited). Source: Commission: Registration fees, Building practitioner fees, individuals: Registration fees.
If you pass
- You are told by email, and the application moves to its next stages. You may be asked for more information. Source: Commission: Building exams, frequently asked questions, What happens when I pass?
Other ways an attempt goes wrong
- Breaking an exam rule. A breach can mean sitting again in person, further assessment, or refusal of the application. The Commission says serious breaches may result in failure of the exam. - Running out of time. The exam is submitted automatically when the time expires, finished or not. Source: Commission: Building exams, frequently asked questions, What if I need more time to complete the exam?
- Missing the timeframe. If the dates you are given do not suit, email the Commission within 3 days of the notification. A new date is normally within two weeks of the original timeframe. - Leaving the identity check too late. It can take up to 3 days to be approved, and you cannot start the exam until it is. Source: Commission: Building exams, frequently asked questions, Do I need to do anything to prepare for the exam?
